The sound of a hollow, resonating “thud, thud, thud” was the only sign of life in the dark, desolate castle. As a pair of striking green eyes surveyed the pitiful scene, the tall, slender man stopped in his tracks, as he neared a set of stairway. Immediately, a deep silence settled into place, empty of any hopes of further livelihood in its shallow depths. He had finally returned to his home or, rather, what was once his home. It was a humorous situation, really. Before his “death”, he was in the midst of brimming activities, thrown particularly array from a messy conspiracy. Now? Now, he seemed to be the single soul left. He could be wrong, of course. If he had been “resurrected”, who could say the others weren’t too? He wasn’t looking forward to the reunion though. It had been a few months since he found himself reawakened in a dank, dirty alley. With unanswerable questions flooding his mind, he had made the best of his predicaments, visiting clubs and generally mingling with the citizens. He even had some more than satisfying encounters with pretty, young boys and girls, all prepared to open the doors to their bedrooms for him. Partying could last so long, until an overwhelming desire to return to a familiar setting crept in. It was why he was here in the one spot he should avoid the most. Brushing his hand over the railing, he began his gradual ascension. He could obviously portal to where he wanted to be, but he preferred the slow exploration. He took in the walls, adjoining long, seemingly endless hallways, the still remarkably clean kitchen, and then, at last, his old room.
Nothing had changed. Everything was exactly in the same place, untouched. Remarkable, it was. He wasn’t certain about how long he had been gone; nevertheless, it was almost warming to know he wasn’t going to be thrown off-course. Time flew by and there would forever be a constant change in the universes, but there was one thing he could count on: Sex. Picking up the box of condoms on his nightstand, he managed an amused chuckle, tucking it into his black jeans. They would come to use pretty soon. As he exited his barely reacquainted sleeping quarter, he opened up a portal and abandoned the decaying building for something better, something to actually look forward to.
Axel has returned.
